January Trees
Where shall I find the resilience of trees?
I envy their courage. In the first warm rain
the poplar branches swell with the hint
of new buds. There are even tips of yellow.
Have they have forgotten autumn, with last year’s
chestnut leaves still rotten in the grass? That’s not easy to do.
Let me study the endurance of my eucalyptus
whose ovals shivered in the wind all winter through.

Откуда взять мне несгибаемость деревьев?
Завидую их стойкости. Лишь первый теплый дождь прошел-
И снова почки новые и новые листочки
Проклюнулись на старых тополиных ветках.
Ужель и осень ими позабыта, и прошлогодняя листва
каштанов, еще гниющая в траве? Совсем непросто это.
Мне прочности и выдержке учиться надо у эвкалиптов.
Их листья на ветру дрожат всю зиму, и выживают.
