Tonight sleep will be slow
in coming, and when it comes will bring
bad dreams: I said no
when you wanted to give me
spring — I refused the spring.
But all night long
it sings and sings and keeps
at its little song
that will not
let me sleep;
how can you command it to go,
say: «Be still!»
You wanted so
to give me spring,
the bitter wind that blows,
dawn in the woods, the small drops strung below
the boughs, the snow’s turquoise tinge,
the icicles’ brittle fringe,
ask me again —
I’ll not say no.
