Ворон
Черный ворон, черный дьявол,
Мистицизму научась.
Прилетел на белый мрамор
В час полночный, черный час.
Я спросил его: – Удастся
Мне в ближайшие года
Где-нибудь найти богатство?–
Он ответил: – Никогда!
Я сказал: – В богатстве мнимом
Сгинет лет моих орда,
Все же буду я любимым?–
Он ответил: – Никогда!
Я сказал: – Невзгоды часты,
Неудачник я всегда.
Но друзья мои добьются счастья?–
Он ответил: – Никогда!
И на все мои вопросы,
Где возможны «нет» и «да»,
Отвечал вещатель грозный
Безутешным НИКОГДА!..
Я спросил: – Какие в Чили
Существуют города?–
Он ответил: – Никогда! –
И его разоблачили!

The Raven
Coal-black raven, coal-black devil,
Studying the mystic art,
Lighted on the shining marble
Upon a midnight hour dark.
And I asked him: Will I prosper
In the years that lie before,
Will the wealth I seek be granted?
Quoth the raven: Nevermore!
Then I said: Well, let my life
Be passed with riches fancy-wrought,
All the same, will I know love?
Quoth the raven: Nevermore!
Then said I: Bad luck has ever
Been my lot. Misfortunes swarm.
Will my friends at least be happy?
Quoth the raven: Nevermore!
And to all my questions where one
Might have answered «Yes» or «No,»
That grim prophet only uttered
His despairing NEVERMORE!
«Tell me, will you,» then I asked,
«What the towns of Chile are?»
Quoth the raven: Nevermore!
And was straight away unmasked!
